Patience is a Virtue

Everyone has the ability to write, which is why the publishing world is inundated with query letters and manuscripts. Some successful writers have degrees while others don’t. If a book, article, poem, etc. is written for the appropriate audience, is researched well and has a unique voice, that piece of writing will most likely be published regardless if the author has extensive writing experience or a degree. I think what is most frustrating about the publishing world is that there are too many variables that can affect whether or not your piece of writing gets accepted.

When you’re an aspiring freelance writer with not that much writing experience, you have to work diligently at getting experience (paid or unpaid) and be consistent with getting your name and work out to editors on a daily basis. Unfortunately, you will most likely dedicate a large part of your time sending out your work and applying for jobs only to be rejected or ignored. I actually keep all of my rejection letters in a folder, and every time I receive another one it just prompts me to work even harder to prove to, not only myself, but others that I will get that piece of writing published even if I have to do some major editing.

Although it can be discouraging and you will probably feel like a failure, you have to consider the variables and understand that getting something published takes patience and time as well as strength and motivation from within yourself.
