Finding Jobs Outside the Home
As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, it’s important to create a paper and electronic portfolio that contains your resume, a sample cover letter to a potential employer and writing samples (published clips are best). Once you have this ready to go, it’s time to start trudging through the job markets to find a job that’s right for you. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it can be time consuming and frustrating in the beginning.
Depending on where you live, you might have more job opportunities that you can do outside the home. For example, a company might need a technical writer or an organization/business might require the expertise of a copywriter or editor. To search for these types of jobs, you should purchase local newspapers and look in the classified section or even go online to view the newspaper’s website. Also do searches on the main job boards like Monster.com, Indeed.com and CareerBuilder.com. Word of mouth works too, so tell all of your friends and family members that you are currently looking for a writing job. I work in a research department of a hospital, and the only reason why I knew about this job was because a former coworker of mine worked there.
If you prefer telecommuting writing jobs, check out tomorrow’s post on how to find them.
