Make Conversations Come to Life
One thing that can make your readers put down your story is bad dialogue. Some writers have a difficult time creating realistic conversations between their fictional characters. Just because they are fictional people doesn’t mean the way they talk should sound fake too. The purpose is to make your characters come to life. The way in which the characters talk (vocabulary usage, accent, dialect, etc.) gives your readers a better picture of what these people are like. A technique that sometimes helps is to read your dialogue out loud. Imagine the words coming out of your character’s mouth and ask yourself if it sounds natural. Also keep in mind that when people are talking to each other, they often use contractions and speak less informal depending on who they are speaking to.
I agree with you. Nothing worse than totally fake-sounding dialogue. Sometimes it just sounds so contrived.
